2007 Newton Vineyard Red Label Claret Napa Valley Claret
Marmota monax: the common American groundhog with whom Pennsylvanians have a most disturbing relationship. Why we ascribe human qualities to these lowly rodents, and hold them in such reverence is beyond me. Since 2004, we have been subjected to the cutsie antics of “Gus”: the spokesperson for the PA Lottery. He can sing, dance and play various instruments. He even made the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad which, being a Steeler fan, comes as little surprise.
But Gus is a piker when compared to the centenarian meteorologist: Punxsutawney Phil. You might wean from my tone that I am not a big fan of Phil. It’s not so much him, but what he represents: the possibility of six more weeks of winter. Now if someone goosed me out of my slumber with an electric prod I, too, would probably curse them in any number of ways, but I swear, if Phil makes the wrong call this year, he’s history!
So, what would you pair with a fricassee of, ahem, small game? I’m thinking a nice Bordeaux-style wine would do the trick. I’m partial to the 2007 Newton Claret and its masterful blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. You’ll like the dark fruit and soft mouth feel. What would you pair it with?
